Resignation of Pope Benedict

“...WITH FULL FREEDOM I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.”
Full declaration.

  1. I am still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor from seeing this news online! Church news doesn't get much more earth-shaking than this and much prayer for Pope Benedict and his successor is in order.

Although the possibility of an American being the next pope remains VERY remote, I note that the two American cardinals I see mentioned most often as "papabile" in the Catholic blogosphere -- Cardinal Dolan and Cardinal Burke -- both have connections to St. Louis (Card. Dolan was born and raised in the area and Card. Burke was archbishop from 2003-2008).
