Saint Blaise

Saint Francis de Sales Oratory, in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - stained glass window of Saint Blaise, from the Emil Frei Company

Stained glass window of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Roman martyr, at Saint Francis de Sales Oratory in Saint Louis. Photo taken today after Mass and the traditional blessing of the throats. This window shows the Saint wearing red vestments — symbolic of martyrdom — and is holding crossed candles that are often used during the blessing, although two candles twisted together are also used, as are the relics of the Saint.  The blessing used is the following:
Per intercessionem Sancti Blasii, episcopi et martyris,
liberet te Deus a malo gutturis, et a quolibet alio malo.
In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr,
may God free you from illness of the throat and from any other evil.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
