Tu es Petrus - Thou art Peter…

Dear Faithful and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Oratory,

It fills all of us with great joy and honor that our beloved Holy Father is visiting our country this week.  Also our Institute will be represented at the Mass of His Holiness at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York this Saturday. Our newly ordained priests Fr. William Avis and Fr. Matthew Talarico will be assisting at this Mass for priests, religious and seminarians at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York this Saturday.

All of us should unite ourselves in a spiritual way with the Holy Father during his visit to our country. At St. Francis de Sales Oratory there will be two special occasions to pray for and with the Vicar of Christ on Earth. This Sunday’s (04/20/2008) High Mass at 10:00 am will be celebrated in the intentions of the Holy Father. At the end of the Mass a solemn prayer for the Holy Father is to follow. For this occasion the Music Director of the Oratory, Mr. Nick Botkins, has composed a solemn responsory Tu es Petrus for choir and organ in honor of the Holy Father.

Next Thursday, April 24, marks the third anniversary of the enthronement of Pope Benedict XVI. On this occasion the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite foresees a special Mass of thanksgiving. In our institute and at St. Francis de Sales Oratory we have a particular reason for thanksgiving in this first year after the publication of the Apostolic Letter given motu proprio Summorum Pontificum. The Votive Mass on the Anniversary of the Enthronement of the Pope will be celebrated as Solemn High Mass on Thursday, April 24, at 6:30 pm. Also on this occasion the solemn responsory Tu es Petrus will be sung again.

Please, join us to pray for our beloved Holy Father and to thank God for his pontificate.

I am happy to express, once again, my profound gratitude for the generous contributions we have received for the special collection for the seminary of our Institute. The total amount has grown to $4,656.00 I am certain that this is also the fruit of last years’ ordinations when many of you had the occasion to meet with the seminarians of our Institute. Thank you very much for your generosity and for this expression of confidence in the work of our seminary. Your generosity in this special collection does not take anything away from us, but it enriches us through the education of good priests for the future. Please continue also to support generously the restoration of St. Francis de Sales Oratory.

Please, include in your prayers also the Prior General of our Institute, the Very Rev. Msgr. Gilles Wach, as he is traveling in Africa at this time to visit the missions of our institute in Gabon, Central Africa. We are very happy to receive Msgr. Wach in St. Louis at our Oratory from Monday June 3-Wednesday June 5.

With the assurance of the pious remembrance of you, your families and all your needs in my prayers and at the altar I am

Yours devotedly in Christ the King,

Fr. Karl W. Lenhardt

Episcopal Delegate/Rector/Vice Provincial
