Dear Friends of St. Francis de Sales Oratory,

We wish to inform you about the following events and highlights in the life of the Institute’s Oratory in St. Louis:

Divine Mercy Sunday

“It is not easy to love with a deep love, which lies in the authentic gift of self. This love can only be learned by penetrating the mystery of God's love. Looking at him, being one with his fatherly heart, we are able to look with new eyes at our brothers and sisters, with an attitude of unselfishness and solidarity, of generosity and forgiveness. All this is mercy!”

Pope John Paul II taught that it is by God’s Mercy that man is able to love. The graces of redemption enable us to participate in the love of God and to open our hearts for the love of our neighbor. Sin disturbs or even destroys the loving relation with God and man; only God’s mercy can re-establish this relation and our ability to love fully.

This coming Sunday the Universal Church celebrates the Sunday of Divine Mercy. The liturgy celebrates the joys of Easter, the merits of the Divine Savior and the institution of the sacrament of confession. “Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” Divine Mercy, exercised through the Catholic priesthood, is imparted to us primarily through the sacramental channels of the Church. Easter and the feast of Divine Mercy are closely linked and remind us at the abundance of divine gifts with which we have been entrusted.

After the 10 am High Mass this Sunday the Divine Mercy Image of our Lord will be blessed and the chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed. A plenary indulgence under usual conditions is made available. Please join us!

Good Shepherd Sunday

On April 26 we will celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday. “Ego sum pastor bonus – I am the good Shepherd.” The love of God made man is the source of our salvation – and the source of all virtue and merit. The priesthood of the Catholic Church is rooted in the priesthood of Jesus, who gave His life for our souls. As God and man Christ is the Sovereign and Eternal Priest – and the sacrificial victim of infinite value.

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest wishes to form priests according to the heart of God. During seven to eight years in our seminary in Gricigliano near Florence/Italy young men from all over the world are prepared to care for the souls entrusted to them by celebrating the holy sacrifice of the Mass in its highest liturgical form, teaching, preaching, absolving from sins, and by guiding the souls through all this to the heavenly fatherland.

As in the years before we will ask you on that Sunday to donate generously to support our seminary in Gricigliano. The Good Shepherd Sunday is an appropriate occasion to remind our friends and faithful of the great need we all have for good faithful priests who bring the gifts of divine grace to us with wisdom, gentleness and generosity. Please support the Institute’s seminary in Gricigliano. Thank you very much for all you do continuously to help us!

Blessing of Household Oil, Salt

"Every creature of God is good … for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer" (1 Tim. 4:4-5).

On May 10 we will bless oil, salt and other natural gifts and items. Please bring those things you like to have blessed to the baptismal font in the Church. A table will be prepared there where the blessings will take place after both Masses.

First Communion – Mother’s Day Brunch – May 10

On May 10 we will see 18 children receive Holy Communion for the first time. The Eucharist as participation in the Divine Life – our children deserve to be prepared well for this important step in their life as Catholics. First Holy Communion is so important to the Church that she makes plenary indulgence available to all faithful who assist at this Mass devoutly, under the usual conditions.

On the same day the Knights of Columbus offer a Mother’s Day Brunch in the hall, open to all attendees of the Masses, their families and friends. Reservations are recommended. Price per person for this brunch is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children age 6-12 (children age 5 and under are free). This brunch is an excellent opportunity for all of us to enjoy the community life at the Oratory with good food and to support the many efforts of the Knights at St. Francis de Sales.

(If you are interested in the Knights of Columbus Squires for boys and young men in the age of 10-17, please contact Mr. Jim Kahre (314-680-9520) or Mr. Chris McCann (618-635-6264).

In Christ the King I am faithfully yours,

Rector

Episcopal Pro-Delegate
