Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs

Today is the memorial of Paul Miki and Companions, martyrs of the Faith in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1597.

A painting of the crucifixion of the martyrs, from the Church of the Holy Martyrs of Japan, in Japan, Missouri.

In case you missed it, see my article from December of last year.

Among the crucified were six friars of the First Order of Saint Francis, three Jesuits, and seventeen Franciscan tertiaries.
"My religion teaches me to pardon my enemies and all who have offended me. I do gladly pardon the Emperor and all who have sought my death. I beg them to seek baptism and be Christians themselves."
—Paul Miki, Acta Sanctorum
