SEISMOLOGY has been called "The Jesuit Science", having been pioneered by members of the Society of Jesus. The word 'seismology' comes from the ancient Greek words σεισμός (seismos) meaning 'earthquake' and -λογία (logia), meaning 'sudy of'.
