PLEASE PRAY FOR YOUR SEMINARIANS

Sacred Heart of Jesus, mosaic, Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri. Photo by Mark Scott Abeln

That is a lot of seminarians! The restoration continues.

Click here for my original photo of the mosaic. The Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is in the west transept of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis; it was commissioned by Archbishop Raymond Burke and was designed by Duncan Stroik. The mosaic comes from the Vatican Mosaic Studio.

  1. I didnt realize that Duncan Stroik was just 20 miles up the highway from me. He has quite an impressive list of projects on this website. Check out the the family chapel that is in a private home in Nebraska. Certainly no expense spared in this or any of his projects.

  2. Actually, few churches are now willing or able to spend anything close to what was typical even 50 years, and that includes many of these projects.

In the old days, I used to do project cost estimates: most of the money on any construction project goes to the major systems including structure, roofing, foundations, and significantly HVAC and plumbing. One recent project I looked at is a neo-Baroque church in Chicago: decoration budget was 10% of the total, and this church is very elaborate.

One of way of avoiding excessive cost is by avoiding an increase in project scope: many modern church buildings try to do too much and often end up as multi-purpose activity centers. Designing a church as a church is one way of keeping costs low.
